While We Were Here: Portraits of New Mexico FamiliesRush Creek Editions announces the publication of While We Were Here: Portraits of New Mexico Families, a collection of 62 photographs made by Alex Traube during his 2024 artist residency at the Vladem Contemporary, a satellite venue of the New Mexico Museum of Art.

Over the course of his monthlong residency, in June 2024, Traube invited New Mexico families to participate in free portrait sessions held at the museum. The definition of “family” was intentionally left open. Across four Sunday sessions, more than 200 photographs were made, from which 62 have been selected for this volume. The photographs are personal keepsakes for participants and a broader social document—an intimate and collective portrait of contemporary family life in New Mexico.

The book includes essays by Alicia Romero (Head Curator, Albuquerque Museum), Samantha Dunn (award-winning novelist and memoirist), and Mark Tiarks (award-winning journalist), each offering distinct perspectives on portraiture, community, family, and representation.
