What a fascinating and well-conceived project ‘Friends Then & Now’ is—a study in time and humanity—and the result, both beautiful and haunting, can’t help but remind us how precious a thing a human being is.

After having a new passport photo taken about four years ago, I decided to pair it with a self-portrait from 1970. That led me to dig into a large archive of my portraits of friends, lovers, former students, and others to create similar ‘then/now’ pairings. When I did not have either an old or new image, I “borrowed” one from the Internet or was kindly provided with one by my subjects. When I first showed slides of the paired images, I would tell stories about the people portrayed. My audience encouraged me to include stories as part of the finished works. Stage 1 of the project, sans text, is above; the text-and-image pieces are below.
Friends Then & Now Stories
This was so engaging, so well written, I was sorry it was over. A big congratulation on this wonderful work. I want you to win a prize, be discovered, get an Oscar.
